Having recently been appointed into a new role as Technical Support Engineer, we caught up with Nathan T to understand more about his previous role as a Data Centre Services Engineer and how this set him up for his career progression at Pulsant. In the role, Nathan's day was a blend of productivity, collaboration, and personal growth, with plenty of hands-on experience and continuous learning opportunities that helped him thrive in his role. Here’s a glimpse into a typical day, from his morning coffee to the end of his shift.
Morning:
Wake up with a cup of coffee and some quiet time to mentally prepare for the day ahead. With motivation, I aim to get to the gym before my shift, always feeling accomplished once I get there. The gym is generally quieter at this time, which is a bonus. Easy, quick drive to work avoiding the usual rush hour traffic. Audiobook or metal on the stereo, mood dependent. The shift team all arrive, engaging in healthy banter and plenty of coffee. We chat about music, sports, tech, and anything else. Our people are close-knit, bringing a variety of perspectives to the table. We discuss the day’s work, any incidents or special projects, and then dive into our tasks. Client requests start coming in, including running cables, installing equipment, consoling onto servers and networking kit and assisting other teams in diagnosing issues, backup tape changes, and special projects.
Noon:
Lunch break, utilising a full kitchen and comfortable rest area. Some basics are provided, and having access to a full kitchen makes lunch easy to prepare. Given the active nature of the role, it’s common to build up quite an appetite during the shift. After lunch I will always try and get some study time in. Hands-on practice complements my studies, significantly aiding my career growth. The support from colleagues in other departments or senior positions has allowed me to explore other potential career roles. Pulsant is very supportive of growth and actively encourages it.
Early evening:
Hands-on work generally stops, and the last few hours are reserved for updating records, tidying up the day’s work and checking what’s needed for the next day. As the role covers three sites, we often communicate with other shift team members about their upcoming work and offer assistance when needed. End of the shift and head home, again avoiding rush hour traffic. While the 12-hour shifts can be long, they are rewarding, and the 4 days on / 4 days off schedule offers unmatched work-life balance.
