Manchester has undergone an accelerated evolution in becoming a technological hub to rival London and the South. It has become a true Northern Digital Powerhouse.
The recent Adoption of Digital Technologies and Skills (ADiTS) in Greater Manchester survey has revealed that 78% of the firms located in Greater Manchester use at least one type of advanced digital technology, led by firms in knowledge-intensive service and high-tech manufacturing sectors. Cloud, Big Data and AI dominate the top three technologies being employed, while digital technologies are at different stages of diffusion.
Amidst this intense, demanding environment, Pulsant Manchester is helmed by Hakan Yalcin, a data centre manager who revels in exploring different possibilities and combining alternative perspectives to create out of the box thinking. As Hakan himself puts it: “I get the most satisfaction from solving complex problems and finding solutions for internal or external clients. This is done by supporting the growth and development of my team members and fostering a collaborative work culture.”
Following the Pulsant acquisition of the M247 Manchester site, Hakan cites the unification of the team as the most impactful change he has made over the past year. In true Manchester spirit, Hakan eschewed corporate days and brought the team together by building a bug hotel on the site!
Building better relationships
Applying this unorthodox, yet productive partnership to delivering class-leading customer service, Hakan cites the creation of dedicated, face to face time to build close rapport. “We make sure there are both formal and informal conversations and opportunities to put our knowledge and expertise for customers in the most efficient way.”
“We love engaging with clients that can share future projects, so we can bring this experience to bear from day one – regardless of if this issue arises within the Manchester site or not. I see any challenges as opportunities to co-operate and broaden our knowledge.”
This collaborative spirit has led to partnerships with suppliers to develop bespoke racks and ensure housing for unique equipment. It has also driven Hakan to ensure his team visits clients frequently to ensure their customer experience meets expectations. These site visits are ideal opportunities to take on board new requests and assess any opportunities to improve.
Outside the data centre, Hakan is no less inventive: “I played semi-professional basketball in the past and I am looking at coaching a small team, once I have published a collection of the short stories I write.”
One part author, one part basketball player and three parts data centre leader, Hakan embodies the diversity, competition and collaboration that makes him a uniquely Mancunian local hero.
